Has the council been re-roofing propertries in the area recently? Could be where the equipment, tiles, etc were stored. The area is a bit big though...

Always puzzled me why that area of the land was not build on. Perhaps we may now know why ;-)

Looks like a gas main marker.

I was shocked to see the same in Oldfield Lane Cemetery. Around all the headstones the grass has been killed with weed killer. Not content with vandalising the headstones they want to kill the grass as well!

Thanks all for your suggestions and thoughts. This photo (also taken May 17 2012) shows the view looking to the Ring Road. It shows what is the line of a drain on the right but the overall extent of the dead grass area is too well defined I think to be related to that drain. I pass by quite often and so the dead area must have appeared quickly, so it would seem that the grass has been deliberately killed for some reason.

It's not a drain, sewer or a water main, I think it's gas related but not sure.

In the 1950's when I lived in Alwoodley and the old Moor Allerton Golf Course was still there, there was a footpath that crossed it, access being on Nursery Lane. It came out by Moortown R.U.F.C. and continued via. a ginnel up to the Community Centre. We were told by local sages of the time that it was part of a path from Kirkstall Abbey to one of the other abbeys - can't remember which. So it may be worth further investigation, who knows what lies beneath our feet? :-)

The path is still in existence Johnny, but now bisects a housing estate built on the golf course in the 1970s, must be a right of way. Would be interesting if there's any evidence prior to the golf course being built.
