Thanks all for your suggestions and thoughts. This photo (also taken May 17 2012) shows the view looking to the Ring Road. It shows what is the line of a drain on the right but the overall extent of the dead grass area is too well defined I think to be related to that drain. I pass by quite often and so the dead area must have appeared quickly, so it would seem that the grass has been deliberately killed for some reason.

Hi Phil, it could be where the Kirkstall tunnel comes to the surface. In the 1950's when I lived in Alwoodley and the old Moor Allerton Golf Course was still there, there was a footpath that crossed it, access being on Nursery Lane. It came out by Moortown R.U.F.C. and continued via. a ginnel up to the Community Centre. We were told by local sages of the time that it was part of a path from Kirkstall Abbey to one of the other abbeys - can't remember which. So it may be worth further investigation, who knows what lies beneath our feet?

Daft I call it - What's for tea Ma?
