Prisoner of War Camp in Leeds

I have heard there was a POW camp in Leeds at the top of Butcher Hill - any info anyone?? tried a search on here, got nothing....

It's just on the Leeds boundary now (or so I believe), but I'm not sure about at that time??But, Lofthouse Park was a POW/Interment camp after its days as an amusement park were over.http://www.twixtaireandcalder.org.uk/cg ... 20camps%20

I lived there untill getting married the name Butcher Hill i was told is becouse many many years ago people were hung drawn and quartered ,and yes they was a P.O.W camp on Butcher Hill ,sorry but i dont know any history about that.

On the railway bridge over Spen Lane was painted "POWs WANT TO GO HOME". This was still visible well into the 80s. Maybe it still is.I was told this was painted by the Germans who were desperate to be repatriated well after the war had finished.They had some bottle whoever painted it.

Thats really fascinating, I'd heard there had been a POW camp around Butcher Hill but reading this piece really brings it home to me. I live just off Butcher Hill and hearing about German POWs going to the local churches and working at Woodside Quarry is never something I'd thought about.
