As I understand it it's from the same derivation as "escape". Oops, Edit: I think we may well have acquired it directly from the Romans who lived here though, not via the Italians who were incarcerated.

I thought to scarpa comes from cockney rhyming slang, Scapa Flow = gopronounced scarpa. the a as in carp but not an in hat. Is this the wrong thread.

There was an Italian pow camp in Calverley Woods 1944/1945. The prisoners were used to build an housing estate at Greengates under forced labour.The camp was left empty after the war until the 1950s when Guys Fireworks took over the site, in1957 there was an explosion that killed three people this caused the site to close.

Does anyone know anything about the Farnley camp at Post Hill? Although I think I have posted this before and no one knew anything. There seems to be very little about it on the internet.

I searched google for prisoner of war camps in Leeds and some links came up about Farnley, you may have seen these but maybe not ?
