book wrote: My walking boots are scarpa, based on the Italian Army boots according to the guy on the shop where I bought them. Is that where the word, scarpered comes from? No offence meant just intreguing, I thought scarpa was a Yorkshire word http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/scarperSorry, it's a USAian dictionary site, so not the best but I think you're probably right. As I understand it it's from the same derivation as "escape". Oops, Edit: I think we may well have acquired it directly from the Romans who lived here though, not via the Italians who were incarcerated.

There was an Italian pow camp in Calverley Woods 1944/1945. The prisoners were used to build an housing estate at Greengates under forced labour. The camp was left empty after the war until the 1950s when Guys Fireworks took over the site, in1957 there was an explosion that killed three people this caused the site to close.

Thanks, I think I have, it is mentioned in lists as a prisoner of war camp and this thread on here from 2008 also mentions it - http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messag ... dID=323and I also found this - http://www.online-archaeology.co.uk/Con ... ault.aspxI live quite nearby and sometimes walk the dogs in that general area, so I would be quite interested to find out more - Tilly the second link mentions an anti aircraft gun, sounds like it would have been at the top of the hill?

Every prisoner of war camp in the UK mapped and listed,http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog ... mps-ukWhat would happen if the UK's prison population suddenly increased by 400,000 people? That's what occurred between 1939 and 1948, when thousands of Germans, Ukranians and others became Britain's prisoners of war.
