Vicar Lane/Corn Exchange adverts photo Nov 2 1936

I thought this photo in the Leodis website may be of interest. It is dated November 2 1936 and shows adverts at the Vicar Lane/Corn Exchange trams stop. This is the link to the photo:- http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... PLAY=FULLI find the photo is of interest because of the adverts and that the site is still recognisable today. The 2 current comments are also interesting. One thing though that is different now is that where the Mellophone advert is that side of the building now has windows, so I wonder if they were there then but the advert covered them over. There is an advert for Guinness and on the unseen right side of the Mellophone building the famous Guinness Clock used to be (I don't know if it was there in 1936).

I'm pretty sure that is New Market Street and not Vicar Lane though... Vicar Lane ends at Kirkgate.

As I seem to be being criticised for calling it Vicar Lane I would like to point out that I knew it is New Market Street but called it Vicar Lane as that is what is given in the photo's description in Leodis.

Sorry Leo, wasn't having a go at you, I did mean Leodis. Though in their defence they have a lot of photo's to add!

If it wasn't for postcodes many of these 'add on' or extended streets would have been renamed years ago into one big street. To change all postcodes would have been a logistical nightmare. It doesn't make sense, and causes confusion to have two, and three streets on basically the same street with no visible street boundary.It would be far easier to call the whole thing Vicar Lane, most people do, and a lot have never even heard of New Market Street. Do a poll and ask people where New Market St is. I'd wager they say the road where the Market Tavern used to be. New Market Street was only named differently when Kirkgate ran towards Briggate as a full street. In effect Kirkgate junction did act as a street boundary, with the precincts today it doesn't. Blame it on the post office I say Leo

Synonyms for pedant include: nit-picker; hairsplitter and quibbler. I do not think I was being pedantic in what I stated in my post.

I think this is the trouble with the internet, it isn't always possible to read peoples words in the way they were meant. We all have different characters, and it's this that sometimes causes confusion.Your right Leo.LS1's post could look like he was pulling you over a minor error to a good amount of people, but then again many people would have known it was just him pointing out a mistake on Leodis.Likewise the majors quip, If he had said that to me on facebook I'd have probably retaliated worse, or told him to go boil his head. Either way it would have been said, and finished with a big smiley the way it was intended Banter, and lighthearted fun can be read very differently by people.I just don't think any offence was meant in any of the posts.
