If you read the Stephen King books,. which are mostly set in New England, they seem to have a phrase very similar to our "ayup"

I don't sound to be speaking like that when I 'hear' myself doing general talking! Me too - I was shocked when hearing myself speak on playing back something on a tape recorder in the 1970s! I sounded like a fishwife!Another reminder of my accent was when I was in Paris in the early 1980s and asked for a cup at breakfast as there wasn't one on the table. I couldn't remember the French name for cup (it's tasse) so had to mime it, and when the waitress brought one, she asked what it was called in English. I said "cup" and when she repeated it, I was shocked, as I she mimicked my accent perfectly - I can't even spell it the way she said it, but maybe something like "coup"!!I don't care any more about how my accent sounds - I'm proud to be from Leeds and to have the accent
