The once densely housed area a little west of Park Square.

While randomly looking at maps in the excellent Old-Maps UK (OMUK) website I noticed that there used to be a densely housed area not that far from Park Square, which I was not aware of before. The map with this post is taken from the 1893 map in the OMUK website. I shall post a 1933 map that shows there had not been much change even by then and a 1964/70 map that shows massive change following demolition of most of the properties. I hope this is of interest.

On the fist map it's St. Paul's church, but on the 1933 one, it looks to me (as someone unfamiliar with old maps) like either a big hole or a big mound? Big hole, church demo'd, current building not built

The building there now is Rivers House. Apparently the hole was the church crypt and it was there for quite a while. There's discussions about it here at http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messag ... ID=2254and http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/messag ... =1317Since it was built it has always been owned by whoever is responsible for local rivers. Originally the Yorkshire & Ouse Catchment Board and now the Environment Agency.
