hiya.I was reading a book the other day i got from headingley library(wish id renewed it now so i could quote it) by a guy called walter gill called woodhouse in leeds and it mentions him finding musket balls im meanwood. Now this area is not my most of familiar places in leeds so im asking for any help on this one as a shiver went down my spine when I read this as this could be my chance of finding real treasure (its trerasure to me).Apparently he did an article about it in evening post sometime in 1974 i will try get more details on it.Im curious if anyone has heard anything about this and if so im wondering what my real chances are of finding any ?Also this book was published in April 1984 which also happens to be the same year and month i was born so you can imsagine its well before my time and now nearing 30 years since it was published any help greatly recieved.thanks polo

'fraid my money is on that being a Meanwood Urban Myth.I know lots of folks and have had plenty of ancestors who work played and walked the area. No one ever recalls or mentions these.I suspect that it only exists in hopeful text books and thence online.A bit like the one about Captain Lawrence Oates being 'Meanwood' Note also 'fishermen's lead weights-versus-musket ball'?

Funny you mention that i read another book yesterday the truth apparently about captain oates is that he visited meanwood a few times and if the book is true had or inherited some properties in the area. The book by walter gill said that he and his friends found at least 200 of the so called musket balls i really was hoping to find some.Oh well the search continues.

I think the Family had land all over the place.I take nothing away from the guy but was given disinformation by yep and local hype that he was a meanwood lad.Born in Putney he grew up at the family country seat, Gestingthorpe Hall, Essex. He attended Eton College http://www.antarctic-circle.org/E62.htmAs for the Civil War 'Balls', I'd like to meet someone who's found one and can show me where..If walter found 200+ then Leeds Museum may have a collection?

i have also mentioned on other threads the alleged grave in field containing the Oates monument off Stonegate Drive.this circular mound surrounded by bushes is said in folklore to contains bodies of some of the soldiers killed in a skirmish, however on my taking dave Wheldrake the then information offficer for West yorkshire Archaeology service to look at it,he confirmed what i thought, that it looks like it is in fact a round barrow !
Steve JonesI don't know everything, I just like to give that impression!

It’s the first time in ages I’ve been on here but it’s good to see the Meanwood musket balls are still being debated. In the few years since the original thread on the Civil War battle I’ve kept up the hunt for more evidence, but haven’t unearthed anything else. I’m still of the opinion that it’s all an urban myth and any musket balls found aren’t directly connected with the Civil War.
