South Parade and East Parade.

I am curious why South Parade is so called, as it runs West to East. Likewise why is East Parade so called, as runs South to North. Does anyone know or have any ideas why they are so named.

I could not recall seeing my query mentioned before in SL so I did not do a search. Tut tut, suitably reprimanded myself (mind you the thread was in 2007, long before I joined SL). The "The areas of East/South Parades, were constructed originally as highly desirable residential properties. Similar to those in Park Sq. This area remember was on the very edge of the 'smelly' quarter. And mostly surrounded by open fields, river views etc. East Parade 'faced' east. South Parade south" in Farbank's post is interesting.

The nearest North and West Parades I can find to complete the set are in West Park.....

I've just been looking at those roads in Google Street View (GSV) and noticed that the northern end of North Parade ends at a wall. As Spen Road seems to be on the other side of the wall I assume access to and from North Parade was closed at some stage (possibly to stop rat-runners taking residential roads?). The wall looks old but perhaps it's not as old as it seems. For general interest (hopefully!) this is a GSV link to the end of that North Parade:- http://goo.gl/maps/2LHTJ

I used to climb over it as a short cut when I was a kid. One of my mates was the caretaker's son at Leeds Modern and lived in the school house - this was years before the merger with Lawnswood School. The railings weren't there then though. I don't know when they were added.

Cheers jdbythesea. That there has been a wall there for at least 50 years is very much longer than I would have guessed. I wonder just how long there has been one there?

I've just had a look on Old-Maps and it looks like it was never a through road (though amusingly the modern-day map seems to show it as such).North Parade first shows up properly on the 1921 map (there might be a road of the name on the 1909 map but I can't tell and it's not really built on) and the edge of Horsforth Lane (Spen Road) is definitely solid as it goes past North Parade but other streets show junctions.Hopefully somebody with more skills at this kind of thing will be able to post the maps.
