Drapesy,That old 1937 picture of the three legs and the vine you posted, looking at that and the more modern version above. I would say the olde wine lodge and the vine were seperate premises. My reasoning (could well be wrong - often am!!!) is both seem to have separate entrances, with two different types of frontages. Looking to the upper floors, the windows above the wine lodge are the same as now, but above the vine they are not. It is like the upper floors have been knocked though at some point in time later and the outside windows changed so the look like they balance.Anybody elese got any thoughts on this?Cheerz

It looks to me like the entire front has been altered. All the windows are different (and in different positions) in the two pics (first and second floors, anyway.) There would be evidence in the brickwork if they'd only changed the windows.

Yes - your right about them being separate premises ;this is the caption on LeodisDescription:On left, no 5, part of sign for 'Pram Shop' can be seen, owned by S Lithgow perambulater maker. Next is the entrance to Rockley Hall Yard, once part of the ancient Rockley Hall estate. Premises of Brown and Co house furnishers at no 7. Three Legs of Man inn is at no 9 - landlady Mrs Beatrice Grant. Victorian exterior with glazed tiles, three legs logo etched on to windows, also on hanging sign, also Tetley Huntsman sign. nos. 11-13 owned by Chas Parkes and Co, wholesale wine and spirit merchants est 1850. These premises consist of the 'Olde Wine Lodge' and the 'Vine' public house, Landlord V.C Birch. The 'Vine' sign is a bunch of grapes. Vehicle on left, registration UG 3363 has load of cloths or rags, car, registration, CUA 397 parked outside 'Vine'So the premises are no11(the wine lodge) and 13 (the Vine pub)both belong to the same person - Chas Parkes. My guess would be that he started with the wine business at no.11 then expanded by buying the building next door and naming it the 'Vine' because of the wine connection.Subsequently the 2 separate premises became one.

What are your thoughts on the remodelling of the upstairs, Drapesy? Do you think they just rebuilt the front wall?Cheers Si

Looking back at the photos, i did not notice before the height changes of the vines upper floors compared to the 3 legs. Also the chimney stack has been altered. That makes me wonder how much is original.
