Pumps are expensive to run, need lots of maintenance and breakdown all the time. Just the sort of activities the council excels at. They probably account for half your water and sewage bill.

So i take it that they should rip up all the flower beds in the parks, knock down the various pieces of art we have around the city, sell off the collection in the art gallery including the Henry Moore, pawn out the city museum collection, shut Temple Newsam etc etc etcIts all about creating a balance isnt it,you know,a pleasant place to live and work.We cant just have a barren cityscape with no places to relax and congregate, fountains when properly designed, built and maintained provide a pleasant place to be in a city centre. At the end of the day the fountains were probably cheaply sourced and not maintained to a sufficient degree, which is evidently the case as none of them has worked properly for a long time. This "saving" is nothing more than a paper exercise for as far as i can see there has been no maintenance carried out for a real saving to be made, and when compared to the upkeep of somewhere like Millenium Square for instance, then i would think our 3 small water features come well down the list of the councils expense accounts.By the way the fountains in Barcelona were built in 1929 for the Universal Exhibition, predating the EU by some decades.

Eerrr, no. Just on about thread title.Parks fine and Leeds blessed with many good ones.I don't like recent wave high cost water features. Like city square and the title to this thread. As Cardie said the pump kit = expensive. The 'town hall fountain' was unloved, didn't always work and eventually replaced, stored, then lost..

Leeds has a fine history of faulty and inoperable water features.Who else remembers the 1970's "modern" fountains on Lands Lane near WH Smith that seldom worked, but provided a handy receptacle for all the rubbish that our fellow citizens could throw into them for many years before they were finally removed?

There are several mentions and links to photos on page 1 of this thread about the Lands Lane fountain. PS. Just when I checked my post an advert link at the bottom of the SL page was about a substance to control algal contamination of water fountains and features!

Ta Leo I'm usually too lazy to read earlier posts on a thread ( apart from Cynder + Golden Acre)
