I've been trying to work out what the tall structures are you can see that are lit up at night. There are three very noticeable ones well out of Leeds. One was very easy to identify being Emley Moor transmitter. The second one took a bit of working out which is Holme Moss transmitter. It's the third tower, which seems to be 2 towers together that I can't identify. The mystery twin towers on the right of the photo. The daylight pic to get your bearings is a little hazy, but on a good day Emley Moor is clearly visible.I've marked the structures off and the line they are viewed from on the photo. The mystery towers look to be somewhere in the Huddersfield, or Brighouse direction I would think.Emley Moor transmitter needs no introduction, being 1,084 feet tall it is the U.K's tallest freestanding structure, and the 25th tallest tower in the world.Holme Moss transmitter on the other hand is a little lesser known. The Holme Moss transmitting station is a radio transmitter in West Yorkshire in the United Kingdom. The transmitter is the highest in the country and provides VHF coverage of both FM and DAB to a wide area around the transmitter including Derbyshire, Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire. The transmitter itself stands at 748 feet tall. Anyone have any idea what these two mystery towers can be? By the way Leo you can see the big wheel lit up on a night. I'll see if I can get a photo sometime.

Hi Phill. What the other 2 masts are will be interesting to find out.Regarding the Big Wheel lit up at night you may not have seen the post of mine on 16-Feb-2013 at 19:45:39 on page 3 of the Big Wheel thread in which I posted a view at 19:19 on Feb 16 from the Leeds Trinity Project webcam. It will though be interesting to see how it looks lit up from further out.

But the way it was facing just made it look like a straight line lit up, the wheel facing the wrong direction to make it look good. What was surprising is how far out of town it seemed to appear from this direction, the lack of tall buildings around it giving that impression.

Hi Phill.Regarding how things can look further away from where I know they are I always find the view coming down Scotthall Road into Leeds is very deceptive, particularly approaching and at the Sheepscar Street area. The University for example seems much further out from the centre of Leeds than it is. It seems to be because Scotthall Road does not go in a direct way to the centre of Leeds and the view only becomes direct when North Street is met (but even then the University still looks further out than it is).Apologies for going off topic somewhat.

I suspect the other 2 masts are the Moorside Edge medium wave transmitter near Golcar above Huddersfield.

I think that's a spot on assumption. I tried all manner of search words to find out the answer, but it's a bit of a guess game when your not even sure of the location, or indeed if they are radio, or t.v masts. These are the Moorside Edge Medium Wave radio transmitters, standing at 518 ft. Emley Moor transmitter can be seen in the distance. They don't look it, but 518 ft tall is the same height as Blackpool Tower for comparison. I guess the narrower lattice type design of the Holme Moss, and Moorside Edge towers making them appear not as dominant as a more solid structure. I can often see snow on those hills when Leeds is clear where those three transmitters are. As the site is located on the Pennine Hills, signals can be received from very long distances; Signals can be received as far North as Scotland, as far South as the Midlands, as far West as Dublin and can be received past the coast on the East of the country.

Phil, do you know if the wind turbines that can be seen in your third photo are the ones at Royd Moor near Penistone?

Thanks Phil, that's amazing. I grew up just down the road from there and I'm in a Ch4 Schools science programme about them too! I didn't think it would be possible to see them from here.
