Just wanted to say a big thank you to Leeds13 for the answer to Mourning_belle's question about the Queen Victoria Arch up at Becketts Park.I was doing some volunteer dog walking and little Charlie took me up to the arch - we approached it from behind and I was wondering what on earth it was and what it was doing in the middle of nowhere. I walked round to the front and saw the tiled bit saying that it was there to commemorate Queen Victoria's visit to open the Town Hall in 1858 - couldn't believe I found the answer! The additional information is great though as the answer I found just raised more questions which are now answered!

There is a report on pages 6 to 7 of the Yorkshire Evening Post (YEP) today (Feb 6 2013) about "a project to find more about the patients, doctors and nurses at the First World War" Beckett's Park military hospital. The Headingley Litfest has been awarded £7,600 by the Heritage Lottery Fund for the project. The YEP report has some interesting stuff about the hospital. If there is an online version I could not find it.
