The fire stn. at Chapeltown was lower down Harrogate Rd. On the opposite side to the police stn., going towards the school. It was situated in one of those big Victorian houses that stood there. And the fire engine was in a garage out the rear. Upon receiving a call, the duty watchroom man would grab the key and have the garage doors open for the crew to make a hasty exit. It closed in 1957 and relocated to the new premises at Stonegate Rd. Moortown.Though the stations up York Rd. appeared combined, they each had their own separate areas. They were only ever close neighbours. The union between the police and fire services was severed when the local authorities brought out the Fire Services Act about 1947. But up until the late 50's early 60's, many of the new fire brigades were resposible for running the ambulances also. Not in Leeds however.! I'm sure that the fire station is down the side of the police station on Town Street I think it is. there are big double doors there and a sign saying so... See Leodis 2004225_4011172 which also confirms this "1913. Image shows Harrogate Road looking towards the spire of the Wesleyan Methodist Church which opened in 1877 and is now demolished. The impressive buildings on the right are at the corner with Town Street and houses the Police Station, Fire Station and Chapel Allerton branch of Leeds Public Library (with the twin decorative gables in the foreground)."I'll double check when i go out later on and report back.... On that note though in reply again to farbank, there was no police station here, just the Central Fire Station with the Police clothing store next to it. This would make sense seeing the bridewell was so close. Park Street had the actual fire station on it which was the old Leeds Rifles HQ (Thanks Leodis!) Park Street was the Leeds Police and Fire Brigade Stables after it had been a Barracks for the Leeds Riflesjimbo
