During the later 1950's when I was at Cockburn High School there were regular cross country runs, part of which passed the then Parkside ground of Hunslet rugby league club. I wonder if at least the ground is still there?

It was (well I recall it seemed so!) a long run from Cockburn by Parkside and its area of Hunslet, then into parts of Middleton and coming back along some of Dewsbury Road.

Bet it would seem longer now for both of us:-)

Bet it would seem longer now for both of us:-) It certainly would for me! To think also that when young it was nothing to run about in most weather wearing just shorts, vest and pumps. I have to wear much more than that now so as not to feel cold! If the weather forecast is right it's winter thermals for me by the coming weekend!

Send me a email if you wish, my email addy is in my profile.I do remember that cross country run, we used to cheat but then they started putting teachers at various points checking you.To get out of the cross country run you could pay to have golf lessons at Middleton Park Golf Club, which I did PS I would be more than grateful if anyone can help with thishttp://www.leodis.org/display.aspx?resourceIde ... You just couldn't heat the place! Did you go to St.Silas' School by any chance? I went to ST.SILAS School did they shut it down?then Hunslet Moor for a year before Cockburn. It must have been 56/57 we lived on Albury rd just off Clarence Rd.Nice to see old photos of hunslet but didnt think it was that bad but then old grey matter not what it used to be. You must have been there 2 or 3 years prior to me. I remember going from St.Silas to South Accomodation Road School but only for a short time and then we moved to Tinshill. I have always assumed that when I went to SA Road was when St.Silas closed whicm must have been around 1960/1.

SPLAY=FULL     Hi uncle mick.I left Cockburn in 1962 as a sixth former so though we were both at Cockburn for at least part of 3 calendar years it is unlikely we ever crossed paths. Sorry but I cannot help with the photo.PS. I kept my brown Cockburn hat (with the Cockburn badge on it) that were worn by younger pupils, but I found I had lost it some years back. I remember though that it did not fit my adult head!

Lived in Belmont Mount from 1957 - 1962 and went to Low Road school from 1960-62, and before that to the Nursery school on Derbyshire Street.

Nice to hear some stories from ex-Hunslet lads.I don't claim that from a kid but can trace many in family there and nearby ! I helped to support the local businesses for many years by partaking of their fine wines, beers and vittles.....garden gate, brassmoulders, red lion, crooked billet, junction, station and several others according to finances available in pocket at the time !
        I'm not just anybody,I am sommebody !
