Phill, what has happened to the old engine you show pic of and also the waterwheel and Silt Mill? Are they preserved anywhere or long gone?

That's the only part of the forge to survive Lee, obviously they are listed and a very important part of Leeds history, the buildings themselves will out date much of very old Leeds by a few hundred years. They are to be renovated and to be made a feature of the new development (if it starts)Actually the developer got in touch with me a good few years ago, well it was the people who did the website, plans and all the visual stuff to sell the development, press release and all that kind of thing. They wanted to buy my photos of the old waterwheel and those night shots I did for a very substantial price, the deal was nearly done and dusted until they got back to me, the developer was just wondering how I had managed to get those photos in the first place, of course I couldn't say. I told them it was a sale with no questions asked, or no sale, in the end I told them to get their own photos lol You can see the old part of the forge on Google aerial images herehttp://goo.gl/maps/iPazThat little piece of history left standing, while the massive site was flattened all around it.

Here's a photo of what was left of the forge that I took in Jan 2010:(bigger at http://www.flickr.com/photos/mhoulden/4260620814/). Unfortunately it was so cold that the batteries on my camera started to run out so I didn't get many photos when I was out. I have to say I wish they'd get a move on with Kirkstall Forge station as it would be closer to me than Horsforth station is. Until the rest of the Kirkstall Forge development gets started I have a feeling it will be surrounded by wasteland. There's a long list of documents relating to the development at http://plandocs.leeds.gov.uk/WAM/showCa ... /01400/EXT including a (pre) feasibility study for the new station at http://plandocs.leeds.gov.uk/WAM/doc/Ba ... ageCount=1

The developers apparently now can't afford the funding they've committed to the new station at Kirkstall Forge as part of the planning process and are now going cap in hand to the council to bale the project out, before the Government funding expires...http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/n ... 335Private sector property bosses have asked Leeds City Council to ride to the financial rescue of proposals for a new train station. The station is due to form part of a village-style development at Kirkstall Forge comprising more than 1,000 homes and 300,000 sq ft of office space.Government ministers agreed to plough £10.3m into the station element of the 56-acre scheme in late 2011.A further £5.3m was due to come from the former industrial site’s private developer, Commercial Estates Group (CEG).Now, though, it has emerged that CEG has approached the council seeking financial support for the station plan.CEG originally anticipated funds generated by the rest of the development would help it meet its share of the cost of the station. The start of work on the wider scheme, however, was delayed due to the recession. And although CEG remains in a position to put some of its own money into the station project, a funding shortfall has therefore arisen.A report to be considered by the council’s executive board next Wednesday recommends that the local authority agrees in principle to provide assistance. It also says, though, that “this will be subject to the finalisation of the agreement of terms and conditions which ensure the council’s position is as secure as possible”.The report says the project would deliver a “key improvement” to the local transport infrastructure. It also indicates the scheme’s Government funding could lapse if work on the station does not begin soon.CEG director Jon Kenny today confirmed the rail project was facing “time pressure”.It is not clear how much of CEG’s previously-announced £5.3m contribution the council has been asked to provide. The Yorkshire Evening Post understands any public funds given to the firm would be in the form of a loan to be repaid.Kirkstall Forge station would be on a busy stretch of the Airedale and Wharfedale rail lines, which link Leeds city centre with Guiseley, Ilkley, Shipley and Skipton.Hmmmmm.......

Well, if there's only one security guard in a shed, they're not going to get much custom at the station.

Also on the subject of new railway stations according to Wikipedia's entry on Clayton Wood, see:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clayton_WoodThere is a new railway station planned on the Leeds to Harrogate line called 'Woodside' station. Actually this information is quite out of date by several years. The creation of the new railway station was never actually confirmed. The Burford Group who had been planning some very grand developments for Woodside Quarry envisaged creating a multi-storey park and ride car park to service this new railway station which would have replaced Horsforth's existing station. However with the worlds economy plunging into a state of total turmoil this development was halted before they even lifted a single sod of turf, despite them having spent millions buying the site, getting planning consent and also spending over £1 million relocating the great crested newts to a new set of 3 ponds they paid a company to create just off Low Lane. The Woodside Quarry site has been put up for sale again and so far there have been no takers. So I think Horsforth station is safe for the time being.
