Did any of our SL subscribers manage to see the "meteor" over Leeds or was it not visible?

There doesn't appear to have been any sightings over here on the East Coast. I remember in the 1950's, about 57/58, seeing a comet over Leeds for maybe a couple of weeks. It was perfectly visible with the naked eye and we used to go up to Alwoodley Lane on a night and look at it out over Eccup. There was very little street lighting back then, consequently it was a spectacular sight. I've seen comets since but never one as spectacular as that one.

Yes just this kind of thinghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zpbyb_-QPI0I've seen 2 or 3 in all my years I'd say, blink and you'd miss them really. It looked like it exploded about a 1000' in the air just over Chapel Allerton, but in reality it's millions of miles away

Which meteor was this? I can remember a few years ago my girlfriend at the time and I went up to Otley Chevin to watch for the Perseus meteorite shower and even though it was a fairly clear night nobody saw nothing! There were a couple of dozen amateur astronomers and a professor from the university of Leeds. In the end we just stood up there checking out the stars through peoples telescopes that were set up all over the place. I recall about 3 years ago just as I was crossing the outer ring road at West Park seeing two meteors which were traversing the sky almost in tandem for several minutes before they burned out. They just looked like small hot coals floating slowly in the sky. Also I once saw a very violent and fast moving shooting star which burst into a shower of glittering shards illuminating the whole sky above Brimham Rocks one summers night. The only comet I remember seeing was that Haile Boppe or whatever it was called, back in 1996, that was visible in the sky for weeks, I was in the French-Italian Alps at the time and due to the altitude and clear skies the comet was very luminous.

Dunno jonleeds.....can only pass on the info from another website...as for its' authenticity...who can say ? Still,be interesting if these meteorite showers transpire.I remember the "big one" of course.....was in the sky for ages.I was fascinated by this apparently non moving thing for ages.Of course,it always was,but after a few beers at the weekend it became something to remember and appreciate that much more.
