This photo (which I took today, Sept 15 2012) shows a shrub growing at the brickwork near the top of one of the Dark Arches where the River Aire emerges. It surprised me that a plant not only grows there but seems to be doing well as I would not have thought it could get much nutrient, though it clearly does. Plants are amazingly resiliant things. The Sun was in a bad position for taking the photo but I think (hope!) the contrast between bright and shadied parts does not spoil the photo too much.

It always surprises me to see where plants can get a hold. A few days ago when I was in a bus shelter in Infirmary Street there was a single tiny plant that had managed to grow either in the surface dirt or through a tiny gap in the concrete surface. The plant had a single small white flower (like a daisy) at the top of a short stem. I doubted where it was that it would survive long before it would get crushed but being there today I forgot to check if it was still surviving.
