Leeds Station subway

After a bit of investigating under the labrynth of dark arches i tracked down the underneath of the station subway, From this view you can see it was either a subway or elevated walkway. Directly above the breeze block wall was platform 9. It's funny to think we used to run through there to catch trains. It'd be good to get back inside & see if there's anything old of nostalgia interest :-)

Hi,I've just trained up a member of Station staff and took her down to the old subway/underpass and she was overwhelmed. After a further discussion the next day she also told me about this site so i decided to take a couple of pictures. Unfortunately my iphone died so i only have the 3 pics. The subway is still in place, but it is completely sealed off and is only accessible via a locked door in the 'Cross Arch' which runs between Sandford St and Dark Neville St. The subway is completely stripped including the male toilets, although the toilet wall graffiti remains in place! The stairwells have been concreted over but there are still man holes which lead up onto the station.If you look on on the platform side of the ticket barriers near the Customer Information Point at Leeds Station, you will see a manhole cover and this leads to the old subway.http://www.flickr.com/photos/86255752@N ... RegardsJon That's brilliant to see again Jon, just as I remember it, apart from the curved roof, I always imagine it to have been a square construction, although I've been through it many times in the past. I'm thinking the last time I went down that subway would be way back in 1985, so the memory plays tricks doesn't it?It's a shame the old advertisement boards were stripped away, they're would have been some good memories of the good old B.R era, long before the likes of Virgin rail and First who in my opinion should stick to records and buses collectively Any chance of me sweet talking a little visit down there with you and my camera and lights to get some quality shots of the subway.? It would be great to record it for posterity, I bet they're is some good 80's graffiti left to see too! I used to avoid using the toilets in the subway unless I had to, as they usually smelt a bit rank! If you were a bit late the dashing along the subway to then climb the stairs to get to a platform to get a train sometimes led to very close calls to catch the train. I recall plenty of people struggling at least with the steps, particularly if they had luggage.

Phil is quite correct about the old subway, the old subway is now used for signalling cables, there is access to the subway from the dark arches.

From what I remember the subway could also be pretty entertaining when it was wet because it could be slippery. From Sept 2001 - Feb 2002 I used to commute from Manchester so I got to see a lot of the Leeds First redevelopment work while it was taking place. Memories of waiting on freezing cold temporary platforms to be crammed in like sardines all the way to Huddersfield. The new footbridge is a big improvement, apart from the stairs down to platform 16 being narrow with a very gradual gradient so it takes ages if you get stuck behind someone carrying heavy luggage. It'll be interesting to see what happens once the new entrance opens.
