Apparently Leeds Parish Church today becomes a Minster - there is a special service in connection with this procedure. I'm not too well up on these matters, but is seems that Leeds has been missing out in being such a very large city and not having an abbey or a minster !!
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

I'm not one to follow the doings of the church but this it's good to hear that Leeds' importance is being recognised by the church too.Does this mean there are tunnels from Harewood House to Leeds Minster?

Don't forget, if they tell anyone about them, they aren't secret any more!

It's not that abbeys or minsters represent "promotion" in any sense, but simply that the church in question has a history leading back to a monastic influence. Leeds Minster is a relatively modern edifice, and the church hierarchy had been put in place prior to its existence. It's within the old diocese of Ripon - now called Ripon & Leeds - so Ripon was the centre of church power. York Minster is also a cathedral, but the fact that it's always referred to as Minster might perhaps lead to a belief that all minsters are the equivalent of cathedrals. But they're not.St Anne's Cathedral is Roman Catholic which has its own diocese and bishop, but because in the UK there is the curious institution of the Established Church following Henry VIII's little spat with the then Pope, the RCs have been shoved into the background despite being there first.
