Would be interesting if there's any evidence prior to the golf course being built. Interesting that Geoffb, yes it would. At that time local history was not very high on our list of interests. There was a story about the stream which ran along the bottom of the golf course. It was the habit of people whose house gardens ran down to the stream to make bridges over it to gain access to the golf course and every year a man would come along and knock them down. Also I'm pretty sure the footpath was closed for one day every year.

I took this photo of the area yesterday (August 18 2012). It shows colourful wild flowers that started to appear about a couple or so weeks back. My guess therefore is that the area next to King Lane is being used as a small-scale test bed to see how an area will look after wild flower seeds had been scattered (I think that seems likely) and then the area was left to itself without any mowing. Most of the flowers are in the area seen, as that further up has very few flowers and is still mainly sparse of growth. I've recently noticed that there is a similar-sized area on the left (coming into Leeds) of the Scotthall Road playing fields that also seems not to be getting mowed, though that seems to have much more weeds with few wild flowers so maybe it is a slightly different test bed.Edit added Aug 22 2012. Passing by early this afternoon I noticed that the unmown area on the Scotthall Road playing field has now been mown!

The wild flowers in that small area of ground have appeared quite quickly in the last few days. Most of the area is though sparsely flowered which may be an effect of the dry weather, or perhaps something to do with the ground there as last year most of the flowers (when they came) were again in that part nearest to the shopping centre. Quite pretty to see just now.
