Ha Ha....think me and mates were a lot more "red blooded" back then.We would often "nip" to the Hofbrauhaus(commonly mis-pronounced Offenbrau ! ) for a lunchtime stein or two,not to mention The Gemini Bar,The Palace and The Gaiety. We must have had long lunch hours back then.Still,it was easy to park for free in town and we could drink real fast.Gemini and Palace were always sun lunch spots.(I believe).Other establishments spring to mind but mainly as one-off attractions.....so to speak.

I only went in on a couple of occasions, the upper floor bar with DJ was a bit intimidating. The ground floor bar had the topless barmaids and didn't seem too busy must have been mid week. One of the topless barmaids I across a decade or so later. I was a supporter of the Leeds Cougars American Football team and she with her husband was a member of the supporters club also. The other place I remember featuring topless females - they were dancers - was the Bierkeller at the Merrion Centre. The dancers seem to be on each and every lunchtime. I think youre getting mixed up with "strippers" and "topless barmaids"..the Hofbrauhaus used to have strippers on at dinner times thru the week..ermm,just word of mouth :} Gaiety Bar - topless barmaidsHofbrauhaus - I thought had topless dancers strutting their stuff on a lunchtime. I classed them has topless dancers because they danced to the music, didn't sit down and kept their knickers on. Having said that I think they came on to stage with some sort of outfit on, seem to remember them picking up their clothes at the end of their performance - so maybe they were strippers - I use to watch from the bar which was a fair way from the stage - it was a huge place.I guess the Burlesque nights are a return in a small way to those bawdy nights and lunchtimes of the 70s.

It looks art deco-ish yet it was a fave pub of long-gone old relatives who'd have pre-dated it.Found a teasing pick on leodis which shows it (the 'old' Becketts) Jan 10th 1939 corner of Monkbridge Rd, Church visible.Just left of shot seems to be the 'new'/recently demolished Becketts I grew up with.

I remember that one as the Admiral, but I am sure it must have been some other name before that. This was back in the seventies I think. My 'life in pubs' began (underage of course) around 1966 or 67. In those days it was a bit risky setting foot east of Briggate. And Call Lane was a definite no-go area. 'Mucky Duck' country. Just writing that seems to bring back that the Admiral was at the top of Call Lane on the same block as the Duncan. Memory playing tricks now. I'm sure the one you are curious about had a nautical title.
