The rest of my pics from the start of todays relay on the Town Hall steps are here: http://snipurl.com/242ubjnI must admit to being very ambivalent towards the whole Olympic theme, but we went along as it's a once in a lifetime experience and it seemed a shame to miss it, being virtually on our doorstep so to speak. To be fair, there was a very good atmosphere and a surprisingly large crowd for the early start time.Yes, it is very corporate and we all know the country can't afford it, but what the heck sometimes we deserve a bit of fun.

Just back from a couple of days working in London.Olympics over load!Even the unliscenced street vendors are cashing in on the act, selling counterfeit Olympic tat!I'm glad this great white elephant is down there and, other than a fleeting visit, not up here.Economic crisis? What economic crisis?

I'm Leeds born n bred but live in the south and the money that has been spent in Weymouth is disgusting. Even the PUBLIC park is charging £70 a ticket in order to view the games......As you say, What economic crisis?

We only got a TV in 1958 and I was so shocked by the few programmes we could watch I forgot.lol. Champion theWonder Horse and Popeye were my favourites at that time.My Dad had control of the remote control so whatever Iwatched was at my Dads discretion. Even though I had togive half my wages to my Mum I still had no status untilI left home. You must remember the routine, children wereseen and not heard even though they were now 30 years oldlaugh. Good job God gave the Yorkies a great sense of humour asit was certainly needed. x Nay,Nay....Mrs.Wilkes......."remote control" in 1964......that's stretching it a bit love.Anyway.....good stories by all(as per).

After my first post on thisthread I may have come across to some of you as anti sport/Victor Meldrew old moaner,I am not. This whole Olympic thing is a burden we just cannot afford. The Chief Constable said last weekin a radio phone in that after the G4S fiasco he was asked to provide 700 WY police officers for the Olympicsand could be asked for even more.Figures are bandied about about job creation/wealth producing benefits then we read BMW are providing over 3000 vehicles,I dont think this includes any U.K. made mini versions. The latest thing to land in my inbox is about tax breaks for the multi national, mega rich sponsers who are allowed tax breaks on profits from the games. The UK’s winning Olympic bid included huge tax breaks for sponsors. As a result, massive multi-nationals stand to make a tax-free fortune. Experts think the UK could be losing tens of millions. - source 38 degrees website.Vote on this site if you disagree, site has several other topics of interest.

Olympic sponsors BMW are to provide a fleet of Mini Countryman vehicles to the London Fire Brigade. The deal will see LFB borrowing five of the £20,000 vehicles for the duration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will be re-fitted with fire fighting and life saving equipment and decked out in London Fire Brigade colours. The aim is for the rapid response vehicles to handle smaller incidents within the Olympic Park leaving fire engines stationed in the Park free to respond to a major incident.BMW are set to pay £12,500 to convert the five cars to carry fire extinguishers, emergency care packs and defibrillators.Full story here: http://www.info4fire.com/news-content/f ... r-olympics
