There is a school more or less adjacent to St Bartholomews Church currently. It too is named St Bartholomews. I believe its two predecessors in the area on nearby sites were named St Bartholomews also. One still exists as an adult learning centre. I believe that the building that the OP is referring to was closer to Wesley Road and no longer exists.

I read that as 'imposing school'. As you say there was a school on the corner of Cricketers Place and Wesley Road, right next to the church. Here: http://goo.gl/maps/8n1Phttp://www.leodi ... 8_11668032

The "imposing" building is of course the church. It is enormous, and its siting at the crest of the ridge round which Armley is built makes it exceptionally prominent for miles around.Armleyites generally refer to church and school(s) as "St Barts".The Leodis view Cardiarms posted above is the earlier school, now demolished. The overhead view shows the second school, and the curent school is off that view to the right at the other side of Strawberry Lane.

Greater volume than Ripon and held fewer pews than its predecessor.
