I think your right Blakey, you jogged my memory. I was at Beecroft St school in the early 60's, I remember it well the construction of the estate including the towers. The farm it was built on had a pig sty right along side of the road halfway down the hill. Always spent time on the way home school looking over the wall amazed at the size of them, covered in mud most times.
Where there's muck there's money. Where there's money there's a fiddle.

I moved to Argie Avenue around 1966 when I was 7. I remember Beecroft St school but not the school dinner building.I remember playing in the Sacred Heart school fields though with my sister and her gang. There was a statue of the virgin Mary (?) to the left of the entrance of the school. It used to freak me out!

As far as I know - will check soon - the school dinner building is still there, behind the Merry Monk. When I lived in Grayson Heights (multi - storey) in Eden Mount the building was in daily use as some kind of creche/nursery. Oh dear folks - I hope you're not too hungry - I've just driven round Eden Mount and the School canteen has gone, just a budding grass wilderness now.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

It would be great if Kirkstall Brewery take it on, I think I'd just have a bed under the Kirkstall Pale handpull. I check it from time to time as I live near it and would appreciate it open again - the beer garden downstairs is nicely hidden from the world and right on the river. Pre closure it had obviously had some money spent on it fairly recently as there is a downstairs/riverside bar that is quite smart but wether that will be kept I don't know. The brewary have had it since Oct/Nov '11 so they are taking their time with it....

Just to let you know that The Bridge has not been bought by Kirkstall Brewery per se but by Steve Holt personally who is the MD of Vertical Drinks and the Brewery. It's only a minor point but they are keen on the distinction. I'm sure plenty of Kirkstall beers will be available though when it eventually re-opens.

Spencer's is closed. Hardly surprisingly given it's next to The Scabby and opposite Prince of Wales, which is well worth checking out. Three beers in good condition, £2 a pint on Sundays (only open 12-6 though and they do close early in the evenings) and a nice pub in general.Sorry, going off topic there. Rumours have it there could be plans for Spencer's as a pub again, and a good one at that, but plans are very ambitious so we'll just have to see.
