It shows more clearly what are likely to be the steps from and to Call Lane that Jogon has previously provided information and photos. It also shows what may be some ways to cross over the goit. LeodianThanks it has opened now, my machine on blink. That is a really good quality image/map. Where did you find it please? I can't seem to view old-maps recently, they're just small. It's just an enlargement of part of the 1891 map in the Old-Maps UK website. Depending on the scale of the maps there some still can be enlarged fairly well. I do though miss the expanded view facility.I like the couple of narrow walkways over the mill goit, with possibly a loading platform at both and a small building or two at one of them to store things (or whatever use!). The users of the Old Parrot Hotel need not use the steps as there is plenty of room to reach the river opposite the hotel. I can though imagine some inebriated users still going to the steps and tumbling down into the goit! I bet there were no major concerns in those days about people falling into the river and so no calls for a fence to stop them! The Riverside Mission Room sounds interesting.

Must have been quite a fall from the bondsman dam to the east side of neville Street where the goit is about 12ft below street level. Philld is good when it comes to goits etc. Surely he'll know ?

I think a missing link here is that everyone has been diverted by the current 'live/working' Dark Arches.

How a name came to be used for a place can probably be asked of anywhere, but I wonder why the area is called Cynder (also given as Cinder in some old maps)? I like the interesting photo in your post immediately above Jogon. The man with the long coat and bowler hat (?) will be the 'boss 'and the man with the flat cap (?) and rough looking clothing will be the 'worker'.

Hello Leodian, nice to see youI did wonder, seem to be a lot of cinders back in the day. Expect with the very local power stations, gas works, coke works etc there was a lot about?Looking at the current 2012 location of the Isle I've just found http://gridreferencefinder.com/index.ph ... 01HH#which I think uses Bing Maps and has a useful birdseye and rotation keys down the left.
