In the middle distance towards the left can be seen two stone lift shafts, where railway wagons were once raised and lowered from the high level tracks to a low level goods yard. The lift shafts and viaduct were being demolished at the time this photo was taken. However, a preservation order was hastily slapped on one of the shafts and it has survived

I've just been doing a before and after comparison. The change is immense, you'd hardly recognise them as being the same street. An incredible amount of change has gone on over the years on Northern Street, nothing at all survives from the 1981 shot....not quite, one thing stands rather defiant and is still there. I was really pleased to see the air vent of the 'shhhh Secret Leeds tunnel' on the 1981 shot.I've always wondered how it looked in the old days.

I wonder if it one of Phill's 'Lucy' boxes? Eagle eyes strikes again. I think this will answer your question Leodianhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/4414470091/Most likely you will have seen it before, It pops up on S.L at regular intervals.
