Canal Road/Ledgard Way, Armley

I am interested to know what this area looked like prior to the construction of Ledgard Way.I have searched the Leodis site but there are no photographs.Can anybody help me locate any online photos or maps etc?Thanks in advance

I don't think the Canal Road area has changed that much with teh exception of Dunkirk Hill where the Armley Mills Carpark is now.

Hi Mr WhiteThere is a nice overhead view of part of the area you are interested in on page 45 of Don Bates' book "Beer and Blue Buses" which is a history of Samuel Ledgard and his bus company. You should be able to access a copy through Leeds Libraries.The picture is looking North over the bus garage roof, and includes the brewery, Salisbury Road, Salisbury Grove, Chichester Street, and some of the Aviarys. The view doesn't go far enough East to take in Canal Road itself though.Another picture on page 238 of the same book shows the rear entrance to the Ledgards garage, but doesn't show much wider detail.Hope this is of helpJim.

The remains of the rear wall of the Ledgard Garage rooftop park (which was exactly as large as the depot beneath) can still be seen. Regrettably it has recently been "graffitied". It is partially hidden behind rapidly growing foliage at the top of the steep grass slope on the right hand bend in Ledgard Way immediately after leaving Armley Road towards Kirkstall Road. Copies of the book are in many branches of the Leeds Libraries - with a picture of a spritely young conductor at the bottom of the front cover - me, in December 1957 - where on Earth have the years gone ??

Thanks for all your help.Things certainly seem a bit more interesting around here pre Ledgard way!Ps I found the Samuel Ledgard book at the library and enjoyed it immensely.
