Thanks for that Leodian, the map I've uploaded is very hard to read. Especially as it's not really that old, previous maps are in far better detail and quality, but sadly don't have the coffin marked on them.

Oops the 1934 map did not upload in my post! This one is taken from the 1921 map and even clearly marks the coffin location (if I get this one to upload!).

And also what happened to the human remains, which were presumably reintered somewhere?

It's worth posting on Secret Leeds for the record I think. Using Leodians map it looks like the coffin was found when they were building Allerton Drive roadway.

Just found out this bit of info about the coffin, It's amazing when you know exactly where it was found what far better results you get on Google.**In 1901 this was followed by the uncovering of a stone coffin in Allerton Park. The coffin contained fragmentary human remains and a coin dating to AD 350-3. No other archaeological work was done on the site of either of these two finds so we can say little about the context in which they were found. However, it is tempting to speculate that the coffin may represent a burial in a mausoleum overlooking the wooded Gledhow Valley, a dramatic spot for the last resting place of some wealthy Roman. Such finds are usually interpreted as meaning that there is a Roman settlement, perhaps even a villa, nearby**That's taken from this web page herehttp://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/lat ... -1-2816320

As promised I got a photo of the new signs at the entrances into Gledhow Valley woods. I think I just caught 10 bellies Mick having a stroll through the woods on this shot, probably off to the Three Hulats I take it you mean the mill stone is visible if you go down these wooden steps from Brackenwood Drive Suvi? Can it be seen if you walk along the path? Or do you need to venture off the beaten path to find the mill stone? These new signs are well made and quite informative, this one has been up about three weeks now, and amazingly hasn't suffered any vandalism, lets hope it stays that way. I thought I'd get some close up's in case it does get ruined.Places of interest, the lake, Deans quarry, Gipton Spa bath and Gledhow Hall.Over 115 species of birds have been recorded in Gledhow Valley woods, amongst them a Great spotted Woodpecker, Woodcock, Redwing and Tawny Owls, of which I often hear the male calling the female on a night. Amorous boy he is There are 184 species of woodland flower, and if your lucky you might spot the Roe Deer that live in the woods.Gledhow Valley woods are a great place if anyone hasn't visited. The area down Little Switzerland and past Gledhow Hall, Constable cottage and Bridge House is still very rural looking with country lanes, just as it was a 100 years ago. It's well worth a visit.

I thought at the time it was walking a bit like Max Wall, comical little things they are. Good Evening lol
