The corner shop was a newsagents run by an elderly Sikh man before it closed years ago. The date of 1986 seems about right as I lived near there at the time. I too often wondered why it closed but it has stood empty ever since.
The element of suprise was removed from the Periodic Table in 1926. It was represented by the symbol 'oh'.

I am having trouble finding information on that. Does anyone know anything, such as is it within Armley Prison? Thanks.

Going back to the original corner shop at the start of this thread, I cycled past it this morning. There's a skip outside and when I glanced through the door I noticed it had been stripped back to bare brick inside. It was pretty dark because the windows were covered over and I think the only electric light was a temporary thing being used by the builders working there.Someone who wasn't going at 20 mph might be able to see a bit more than I did.

I'm not much good on the comp but have just come off Ask Jeeves (don't laugh) and it seems prisoners were buried within Armley prison.Course, once on the site there was quite a bit to read re the prison so it turned out to be an interesting read.

If the sentence pronounced by the judge was for her to be given to surgeons in order to be chopped up (anatomized) and her skin was sold in strips as magic charms then I guess we have to go with that (for the time being)....Changing the subject a little, I was reading about Thomas Chippendale and his Otley connection and how he took off to London etc etc. I was then reading through Calverley's parish records and saw a family of Chippendales belonging to Calverley and there was a Thomas Chippendale born Calverley and buried there. The dates exactly the same as THEE Thomas Chippendale. I got to wondering was THEE Thomas Chippendale brought back to Yorkshire and was it kept quiet??? My mind...I should write thrillers! But....we only know what we are told until something comes to light.

I drove past the shop on Friday teatime - the door was open and there appeared to be a fairly large amount of newly delivered sacks of plaster or cement there, so "summat's 'appenin'" now.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

I also recall he was working in Saudi Arabia while his wife ran the shop. Its also said his wife was having an affair and this might have pushed him over the edge. There might be some reference to this in the book linked below with prudom on cover.http://www.amazon.co.uk/Yorkshire-Murde ... 1853064904 Can't believe someone is trying to sell a copy of that for £60 inc P&P. I've just ordered a copy for £2.99+ £2.80 P&P Its a good read, glad you got it cheaper. There's copies on Amazon for 1p now.
Sit thissen dahn an' tell us abaht it.
