There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

In a World nowadays besotted by zany "designer" colour schemes which mean nothing its refreshing to see such good taste again. I was so upset when the glorious dark blue and red (with gold fleetname) GNER livery was scuppered - but happy now to see the simple but very pleasing and dignified ECML silver grey colours - lets hope they are not superceded !! One in GNER dark blue / red for BLAKEY You have too much time on your hands

I am unable to date the pillars and their associated canopy exactly, but they certainly did not exist in c1905 (picture in "Steam in Airedale", Donald Binns, 1984) or in 1910 (OS 40' to 1" map in my possession). At that time there was a station roof consisting of three wooden barn-like bays and no canopies.There is another picture in the above book, dated 30 June, 1933. This shows Platforms 3/4 with the northernmost of the previous wooden roof sections and a canopy identical in construction with that provided on Platforms 5/6, which is the canopy and pillars Cardiarms asks about. Platform 6 of that period is the platform now existing as Platform 1. In 1910, according to the large scale map I refer to above, the platforms were numbered in the reverse order to what was in later use from 1938 to 1967/8, so Platform 1 has regained its old number (as have Platforms 11 and 12 of the current station).Although the terminal end of the canopy has gone to later rebuilding work, I am absolutely certain that the remaining pillars and canopy date from at least as far back as 1938, and in view of the condition of the structure seen on Platforms 3/4, to some earlier date not preceding 1921 (1-2500 map in oldmaps of the site).To support this claim, the roof lines and formation of both the canopies can clearly be seen in aerial views contained in "Leeds Termini", Pixton and Hooper, 1998, and the Platform 5/6 one in current googlemaps views. A further connection is to be found in the unmistakable close proximity of the two final pillars of the canopy at its west end. They are very recognisable in countless pictures of that site to be found in railway publications - and would be lucky not to fall foul of 'elf and safety questions were they to be proposed today due to their limited clearances.
