Where was it?

Hi. I'm new to the site and loving it, just hope I'm posting in the correct place?Can anyone help me please?As a little un I lived in Wolseley Street and my dads mam lived in Armley, (Butts Place). On occasions he'd take me with him to walk to my nana's house and one street we walked down really used to frighten me. I remember us walking down Wolseley Road to Kirkstall Road and crossing over Kirkstall Road where more or less opposite the Rising Sun pub was the street in question.I seem to remember it had houses down the right side of the street (to the bottom of the street) but the houses on the left side didn't go all the way to the bottom as at the bottom of the street there were steps going up the wall. We would go up the steps and come out near to a wooden bridge which crossed water, we would walk over this bridge and continue to Armley.I think the street in question is sorta where Netto etc is? Can anyone tell me the name of the street where the steps were? I seem to remember it being dark there and I'm sure I coud hear running water. It used to freak me out.Both my mother and sister died suddenly last year, my dad died many years ago, so sadly I cannot ask them where it was. I have looked at Leodis till bog eyed and have never managed to find the street.Thanks for any help.

Almost certainly Milford Place, which still runs from Kirkstall Road to the River Aire - where the bridge over the river is still in place, although the plank footway over the bridge has been replaced with a tarmac-covered decking in more recent years. At the other side the long stairway still leads up to Canal Road. From there you will probably have crossed the canal and then the railway bridge, eventually turning up Pickering Street. Wolseley Street and Butts Place no longer exist, though Wolseley Road and Butts Mount remain.Jim.

Well...what a clever bunch you are and thank you so much I cannot remember much and seem to remember the end of the street being so dark. There may have just been a high wall there. I certainly don't recall there being any view.I looked up Wolseley Street on Leodis, it made me feel old It's a while since I was around that particular area and to be honest I wouldn't know where to have looked.Yes, come to think of it I do think it was further towards the viaducts than Netto etc.I wonder how many SL folk remember the good shops on Kirkstall Road back in the old days? We hardly ever went into Leeds as Kirky Road sold just about everything.Will try find Milford Place on Leodis and then have a look on Google Earth. I am so sad. What a way to spend the evening...lol.Thanks again all for your help.

I'm back as Milford Place isn't on Leodis and I can't get Google Earth atm.I think I remember every shop on Kirkstall road... Newtons used to do the best pork pies. Thurstons bakery for bread cakes and vanilla slices..yum. Steads was a little shop where you bought the odd toy etc (he had a parrot inside his shop). You could buy just about anything and everything along Kirksatll Road. I'd say everything has changed but my old dentist place is still there so, as I'm 52 and it was there before me it's been there for some time.
