On the backside of St James on Gledhow Road. I like the way the sick and invalided had to climb six steps to get in.

That took me back a bit. Remember it late 60's early 70's. Chapel Allerton was one of those "places to go shopping" (instead of just current "the Supermarket").As was Oakwood, Harehills and Compton Road.He was the newsagent, higher up just past Stainbeck Ln was a real Fishmongers, etc.Think he did good repeat business with Police Stn next door etc.I also recall walking to Chapel Allerton (mid 60's) as a kid from near Roper Grove. Looks a long way now but thought nothing of it. What is now Gledhow Lane End (after crossing King George Av) used to link up with Town Street, and roughly where it now ends was a classic old Sweet Shop, glass jars etc run by a very old Lady.

CardieI read nearly all of that when searching for the North Bar Stone.Makes sad reading and surprised to learn the workhouse was on Vicar Lane (The West Yorkshire Red Bus Station).

"was" being the operative word Jogon. I've looked many times around there but have never found the North Bar Stone (it was I believe near the steps that went to and from Vicar Lane to the bus station). As to where the North Bar Stone now is I don't know (unless it is still there but hidden).

The North Bar Stone is marked on this 1847 Godfrey OS map. Edit: PS Just noticed this map is on Cardiarms' link above. Ooops! Sorry about that.

ON thread, North Bar photo 13.04.37.    Si - oppo Harrison St would tie in with steps down into old WY (red) bus station. The station was disposed of years ago.Doubt whether Landlord or Tenants would care much and my guess is it was trashed during shopfitting?
