hmm it still looks to me like it's changed since the 1999 shot if you look at the curved central stone pattern above. how strange... EDIT: actually saying that if you move towards urban outfitters on google map and look back from the different angle the door appears to move before your eyes

either way, we can safely confirm it has been moved

Hi Pablo. I think the reason why the doorway appears to "move" is because it is not flush with the wall, but stands proud by several feet. I think this is called the parallax effect, or something. Even so, it still has definately moved to a central position since 1984. I'd love to know why...Edit: Oops! Crossed posts! Also, the chimneys have been removed.

This 1937 Leodis shot shows the asymmetric position of the door, as in 1984.

Also this one. Note gap in ballustrade above central bay.

The conservatory opened in the mid to late 80's IIRC which would tie in these dates.

The leodis colour shot is Feb 1991.That was just before they started work installing the (last) street furniture which they've just got rid of. Namely big chunky marble-faced square blocks with lower lights and large metal lamp-type things overhead. It all looked like supports for tramlines. Together with the slippiest floor tiling they could source. They were starting work on that May 1991. I was down there collecting a suit, kegs a bit see-through now.

I agree with Si that this is fascinating stuff. I've just been playing around with Google Satellite view to see how the area looks in an aerial view but I was surprised just how much the cranes of the Trinity Project development intrude in such views.

Whilst Googling for other views of this building, I came across a recent shot (advertising the New Conservatory) looking square on at the pillared door surround. It clearly shows the bay to the left (where the door used to be) but there is no trace in the stonework that things were once different.
