Yes, we used to call in at the start of our East Street run sometimes.Red velvet and brass I remember not. Hard floor, wooden tables and chairs and an exciting miasma telling of unspoken threat and the gents bogs.

I agree that Rogerroger is thinking of The Smiths Arms - which I remember , and went in a few times, I recall it did have quite an ornate interior, but a bit shabby too.

It was a drinking mans pub with very little ornate about it. The ale was good though.Regards.
