Weenie, this has resonances for me as well. My father was born just the other side of Meanwood Road, less than a quarter of a mile away. His father was --a boot rivetter. My uncle by marriage was at one time secretary of a leather trades union, and lived a further quarter of a mile away. The whole area seems to have been awash with leather related businesses and workers.

carith wrote: There is chapter of this murder in the book Murderous Leeds headed Double Dealing. Robert William Moore was hanged in Leeds on January 5th 1954 aged26 by Stephen Wade assisted by Harry Smith. I've been reading this book. It's really interesting. What surprises me is how quickly juries came to a decision about life or death - sometimes as quickly as ten minutes - and how quickly the sentence was carried out.
