Probably another dating mistake on Leodis, but I believe it was finished in 1932. However, this photograph is claimed to be in 1955, and half the street's not built. http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL

Think Lewis's opened 1932 so you're probs correct on that.

The OS map dated 1933 shows it. The publication date on the maps (at this time anyway) can probably be taken to be at least 3 years earlier, so it probably was at or before 1930

Quarry Hill Flats were completed in 1938 so that will give the oldest date to the photo in question. I would guess the style of the bus and cars will help in giving a date period to the photo. Eastgate does seem odd with no buildings on much of it.In the description in Leodis to the 27 May 1935 image (the compare image) it states "To the far right is D Smith's Boat repairing depot". Wow, a boat repair depot there! I wonder when that closed?

To confuse matters further, here's an aerial view in 1933, showing only the bottom right half completed. http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL

Leodis - City Centre - Eastgate. A great selection of pictures which should go some way to answering the question.

I can remember it being spare land/car park from the first building at the junction of Vicar Lane all the way down to the building facing the roundabout at Eastgate - that was in the 50's. I couldn't put an exact date on when building on it started but I would guess it was the very late 50's. I remember there being a tax office in the building in the early-60's as I had to go there in 1963 on finishing National Service. Hope this has been of use although the dates are rather sketchy.
