I've no idea why, but it was certainly an unusual sight to see a hearse parked up in a pub car park, I can't remember if they had a coffin in the back but maybe somebody else's memory will be jogged? I suspect that might have been Gary Edwards, LUFC superfan and author.http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/leeds/hi/pe ... 031874.stm

The older I get, the better I was.

Phil, real name Norman, relocated the shop from where his father had it at the bottom of Chapeltown Road. His father's shop was where the sign was first used. It is a well known sign in Chappie for the last 50 years. The original sign does appear on Leodis but my quick search a few minutes ago could not turn it up. Maybe if you have link lady you could upload it to YouTube and we can all listen to it once again. I remember trying to buy it and none of the shops had it in Leeds when it first came out, I managed to get a copy at a gig at the haddon hall. The band used the hearse to carry their equipment around in and were once fined for having no car tax on it. The name of the front man was Russell. I talked to him about 10 years ago and he said that when punk came on the scene they thought that they wouldn't make it, I remember them trying to be a bit more punk in their final period but it didn't work for them. They should have stuck to what they did best.
Is it me or has Leeds gone mad

Back to the first post - the band you're looking for was New Market Cross. Sort of Deacon Blue/Aztec Camera influenced cleverness from Horsforth/West Park. They received interest from major labels but fell apart before they signed. Harland revived them briefly as The Johnson House in the mid-90s but that also soon ended. Can be filed in the under-achievers box.

A couple of mates got a band called Bad A-s-s Sid together in the mid 1980's. Did a few gigs but didn't go very far, too many 'distractions' and trips to Amsterdam, but eventually one found his way to London to form the short lived but very successful Pulkas and the other to Seattle to join KMFDM and now the Spitting Cobras. Edit - apparently the profanity filter does not like the cross between a horse and a donkey.
