Thanks Blakey. I agree with all of that.So is it a case of the transport authority turning a blind eye to this overcrowding? Would a driver be disciplined for allowing more than the maximum number of passengers? Also, yes - some of these buggies are like tanks. Ridiculous. I can't remember if I've ranted previously here about something I saw on one of my local buses here a year or so ago. A woman on a mobility scooter boarded the single decker I was on. She couldn't turn it adequately to manoeuvre down the aisle so, wait for it, she got off and lifted the beggar then got back on! I despair etc etc

I seem to recall Worst tried to enforce this about 10 years ago, with prominently placed notices on the buses. There were two camps amongst traveling passengers - those who simply ignored it, and the optimistic ones who rang the bell and hoped the driver would stop. It didn't last long, I think due to the number of "Oi, you've missed my stop" complaints and the vastly increased time at every stop - even for a young whippersnapper like me, the time to walk from midway back along the upper deck, down the steps and off the bus is considerable especially if multiplied by every stop!If you look closely there are still signs to this effect, although they are much more discreet (and significantly smaller). I can't help but suspect that they are only there to be referred to in the event of a personal injury claim: "but the sign clearly says passengers must remain seated until the bus stops, m'lud".Oh, and one final point to add to Blakey's list: people boarding the bus who don't let those alighting get off first, creating gridlock - which is only made worse by the bottom of the step dwellers who are already blocking the gangway (another good reason to go back to double doors!).

Another irritation I have is when a passenger gets on the bus then starts to fumble through bags, purses etc to find the money. You have had time to do that while waiting (unless it is considered too risky for possible theft). It is though even worse when a bus is late and people are complaining then, and only then, when the bus comes they get on and start searching for their money so holding the bus up even more! Oh, and what must be bus driver's hate, the person who hands over a £10 or £20 note and expects the driver to have ample change. I've seen a poor driver struggle to have the change then at the next stop someone else gets on with a £10 or £20 note! Usually a request such as "Have you got anything less?" can result in smaller change being found, but why not do that in the first place! I would hate to be a bus driver. Particularly because of the idiots who blindly walk onto a road without checking if it is safe, or sometimes it seems they just assume the driver will stop anyhow! When on buses I see many very near misses at the traffic lights on Vicar Lane opposite the Markets and at the Vicar Lane/Headrow junction. Only a few days back a lad with a mobile phone just walked in front of the moving bus which was able to stop as it was not going too fast. My impression was that he was never even aware of how near he was to being run down. Another thing I often see are people gesticulating to the driver who has had to slam brakes on because of their careless crossing behaviour. The driver has just saved your life idiot! Rant over.

It's as though they've never been on a bus before and didn't realise that this might happen. And I have to admit, it's usually women who do it.

I'm always glad to see it when these amazing, and innovative new transport schemes end up like this No one wanted rid of the old Routemasters except the Health & Safety Police!
