Cellars at Leeds pubs, bars and clubs.

As I was passing today by The Northern Monkey (what used to be The Guildford) on The Headrow there was a delivery of beer barrels going on (Guinness, Carling etc) which were being sent down into a fairly deep cellar. Though I could only see part of the cellar it was quite large and there was clearly more to it. I wonder what is the largest still in-use cellar at a pub/bar/club in Leeds and (if known) what is the largest no longer in-use?Talking of such cellars I suspect there will be some very old cellars around even where the surface structure may have been rebuilt at some stage.

Cheers Phill.Despite the major redevelopements in recent years in the centre of Leeds I suspect there will be some very old cellars still around. I bet they have an interesting history to tell.

The biggest cellar under Leeds I would say is under Temple works, a pretty vast space it is indeed, If biggee is about he might be able to shed more light on that matter

The biggest cellar under Leeds I would say is under Temple works, a pretty vast space it is indeed, If biggee is about he might be able to shed more light on that matter I would say the Temple works is the biggest under ground place i have seen in Leeds used by Kays for storage as well we walked around there for hours a fascinating place and some history down there. Used for making Flax as well i think this is why all the underground workings to make Flax and big concrete vats as seen in the photos any questions please ask.

I used to use the Guildford a lot in the early to late 80's. Lock-ins on a weekend would usually entail us getting ratted in the main bar. One w/e tho' Terry, the landlord, took us up for a nosy round in the top floor and loft/attic space. There were about a dozen or so rooms all left in the same condition from when it was a hotel. Some of the beds were still made if somewhat very very dusty. It was very spooky up there. Loads of oil paintings on the walls in the corridors, chandeliers and very nice furniture. I wonder what happened to it all when the pulled the back bit down.

Big old pubs had big old cellars, trying hard to remember where though?? Original Oak? Cardi Arms? (the pub not the legendary SL Poster) Adelphi?? Skinners??Later pubs could have "cellars" at the same level as the pub. The more modern biggies like Miggy Arms and the Belle Isle may not have cellars.I've been in a couple of hundred but honestly can't remember any cavernous ones. I can remember the Victoria pub just over Victoria Bridge - a John Smiths, which was pulled down for the Halifax B.S. Building's car park, didn't have the cellar properly sorted and it all fell in one day in the 1980's.
