In a report on page 3 of today's YEP (Oct 21 2011) it states "An ancient monument site in Leeds was close to being caught up in a fire that destroyed a nearby building. Around 20 firefighters were involved in a battle to stop the blaze spreading after the stone building in Beeston - believed to be listed itself - caught fire yesterday. The affected building, off Dewsbury Road near the White Rose Shopping Centre, is close to Stank Hall Barn, a Scheduled Ancient Monument that dates back to the 15th century".The report has some interesting brief historical information about the barn. I have to admit I was only a little aware of the existence of the barn.

This fire actually caused havoc to the morning commuters on the 20th and I first heard of it as part of the travel news on Calendar's bulletin at 7.15am with further updates on a commercial radio station (not fake ) on my commute. It was at all times described as a barn fire.

Perhaps adding, '"An ancient monument site in Leeds....' was to make a minor and now past event appear more interesting?

There is now a friends group for the Barn & Hall http://friendsofstankhallbarn.wordpress.com/, it's been discovered to be a very important site & the oldest secular building in LeedsThey are holding an 'open' day on sunday with timed visits to look inside the barn & to discuss plans for restoration & community use
we have been shortlisted in the http://www.leedsretailawards.com/ in the lingerie and local designer categories, so this year help us win and vote Ages Of Elegance www.thyroid-disease.org.ukwww.fabric-ation.co.uk

Just had a post about the Stank Hall barn renovation project in the f.b group trying to drum up a bit more support. I thought I'd bump this thread and add the links again for them to try help a bit. This short film about the barn was on The B.B.C One show in December.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bomKp6zIoLo&hd=1It's worth watching. The barn is huge inside and it highlights what a shame it is going to waste. The Friends of Stank Hall Barn website is herehttp://friendsofstankhallbarn.wordpress.com/
