Back in the 80s my local was the Original Oak. My mates and I would be there 4 or 5 times a week and on Saturdays meet up before going down to the uni or town. However our patronage of the Oak meant there was an unwritten rule that we would steer clear of the Skyrack - and there regulars did likewise to the Oak - if we ever did venture in to the 'Rack' we could be assured of a 'frosty' welcome at best.Similarly at one time I had a few mates who lived in Horsforth. We would meet in the Stanhope, call in various hostelries along Town Street usually ending up at the Queen's or the Old Ball. However one pub we always visited was the Black Bull - and I was soon warned by mates who knew Horsforth better than me that, because of this fact and if I wanted to keep possession of my teeth, I'd better stay out of the King's Arms.Does anyone else know of any other examples where rivalry between 2 nearby pubs became downright animosity and even violence between customers?
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

The hostility between the Kings and the Bull may have something to do with the Tetleys/Melbourne rivalry you mentioned in an earlier thread.I was witness to 1 or 2 'lively' evenings during my dart playing days, not necessarily local rivals but pubs which had engendered a feeling of 'bad blood'.

Back in the 80s The Skyrack was my local pub! Forced to change though when the students took over. I emmigrated to Woodhouse and made The Chemic my local. Rivalry between pubs was often a result of darts/doms/pool incidents. I remember having to attend a pool match between The Travellers at Hill Top and The Becketts, as a neutral referee because they often came to blows!!
