A bus stop on South Parade.

Railways, trams, buses, etc.

While on South Parade today (June 5 2011) I noticed that there is a bus stop that seems to have been recently put there, as I do not recall seeing one before (if there has been one for some weeks then I must be very unobservant!). The stop is R7 and is for bus services to parts of Leeds (such as Cross Green) and also buses for Wakefield. Just as I was walking past the stop a bus pulled up (they must turn right off East Parade to get onto South Parade) but I did not stop to see which way that bus turned on reaching Park Row. It was very odd seeing a bus service on South Parade.

I thought it looked odd at the time, but it slipped my mind until you mentioned it.I wonder if it it due to the changes and suspension of stops at the Bond Street underclave, as places for buses to park up between journeys are now few and far between in the city centre?

Yes raveydavey, that's exactly the reason, and to my knowledge there's never been a bus stop, nor any need for one, in South Parade before now. Almost opposite this stop is the building which is 13/14 South Parade - at one time Century House, where I started my working career in September 1952 at the princely salary of £120 - wait for it - per ANNUM, less Income Tax and N.I. I took a very atmospheric photo of a Horsfield tram in Park Row from the roof of Century House - in those pre H & S days we were allowed up there without restriction.

It was very odd seeing a bus service on South Parade. Its been in operation since Sunday 1st May when a significant number of changes (that were very badly publicised by Metro) came into force http://www.wymetro.com/travelnews/trinity-stops.htm. Installation work was still being done on Friday 29th April. As mentioned its for Wakefield services (444 and 446) that used to terminate on King Street and then start from the stop outside Mill Hill Chapel in City Square. their next stop is now the one at the very bottom of Park Row, notorious already for Worst buses (95 et al) laying up at their City Square Terminus, and then outside Square on the Lane (replacing the Interchange stop). The link I provided above was sent to me by email on Wednesday 4th May by Metro in response to a request for information on 28th April having fleetingly seen from the top deck of a bus a paper notice mentioning bus stop changes loosely attached to a bus stop. I suspect the web page didn't appear until after the changes were effective.

To be honest, if it stops Arriva buses parking up on King Street until they are "due out", then I'm all for it. Now we just need to work out a way of stopping Worst buses doing the same thing and traffic might stop getting bottlenecked there....

Thanks tyke bhoy for the information on when the bus stop started. The stop does not have a shelter but it still very noticeably stands out and is not easily missed. I think I must not have been on South Parade during May!

The Park Row scandal with the 95 buses makes my blood boil. The terminus for this service is in the Station Interchange and the destination shows "Leeds Rail Station." Many rather arrogant drivers (not all of course) take great pleasure in informing hopeful Station passengers that they are waiting in Park Row for up to ten minutes. While a little generous running time to combat traffic congestion is a good thing, there is far too much from Headingley Arndale to the Station with the results we see. Also, just try boarding one at St. John's Centre IF you can estimate where the driver will choose to stop.
