If you cut down the narrow street Merrion Place there are several stones in the wall (on the side of the building that is the recently closed pool hall/bar). They say they were laid by a number of what I presume were local dignitaries. What was this building?

From at least 1891 to at least 1921 it was a congregational sunday school. In 1933 it is listed on the map as a lecture Hall. In 1859 there is a small building to the west end of the wall that is in what seems to have been a graveyard, and possibly was associated with it

Thanks for mentioning the plaques Spackler. Being in the area earlier on today I had a look at them. I think I may never have been there before as I do not recall ever seeing them. They are certainly very interesting. The wall they are in (at ? Belgrave House) was being painted a brown colour so I saw them just as their previous light sandy colour appearance was being painted over.

I took a photo today (May 26 2011) of each of 4 stones with their inscriptions (if there were more than 4 then I did not see them, but I did try to make sure there were no more). Parts of their inscriptions are eroding, particularly the 9 in the 1934 year which is so poor now it looks like 1034 in each. A photo of one of the 4 stones is, hopefully, here. The other 3 photos will follow shortly, as I have not worked out how to post more than one photo at a time (I often have enough trouble posting even one photo!).I thought the photos may be of interest. I hope that Spackler (the original postee) does not mind me somewhat hijacking the thread. Edit added moments after posting. You may need to at least click on the red cross to see a photo.

Well they all seemed to be added despite getting a "A generic error occurred in GDI+. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code" messsage when I sent in each!

they cartainly had a lot of foundation stones! most places only had one(maybe they wanted them to carry on and build the lot<G>).I wonder if there are any time capsules under any of them?
