I've always loved the market buildings, but I've never been a fan of the content. My mother would never shop there, and the few times I tried it I got meat on the point of going off or previously frozen, bags of veg with rotten ones in the bottom [although that changed somewhat with the pick your own stalls] and other poor quality goods. I was amazed - I'm sure I've commented on this before on here - that when I moved to the north east, there were coach trips to Leeds market. I used to tell people they might as well go to Jackie White's in Sunderland, it's the same garbage. I except places like Scarr's, which sold odds and ends that were handy, and Woody's for a good range of DIY stuff. Oh - and Stringers with their book return scheme. Now I come to think of it, Sea Land Foods chickens on a Saturday were also good value. Redmans was good for bacon. That handbag shop wasn't bad. So I've somewhat destroyed my own argument. But the majority, if not all of those shops are gone.

Did you shop on price or quality, there are some very cheap stalls, there;s a reason, and more expensive. Generally if a butcher has a man on the door offering me an amazing deal I avoid them. Generally use Callards for meat. I sometimes end up with mushy stuff in the bottom of the bag, mainly cos i buy lots and pack badly. Can't remember the last time I got any duff fruit. It's something the management clamped down on a long time ago. If it happens mention it to them. They cleared a lot of dodgy traders out of the open market about 10 years ago IIRC.

It is true that there is varience in quality of produce however, careful consideration and observation will avoid much disappointment.Even in days gone by, the volume of customers and sales demonstrates that, for what ever reason, products on sale met the needs and means of a great number of people. I can not use the market very often but I note that, vegitables for example seem to have a longer 'shelf life' once home than the nicely packaged 'class l' items from the supermarket which are often unusable after a few days.tighter legislation over this last 20 years has had its influence withregular inspections - some enforcing ludicrous EU rules, others perhaps sorting the wheat from the chaff as in this report from the YEP - 'A MARKET stall holder was fined for selling poor quality fruit and vegetables. Had a heartwarming experience in the Market this lunchtime. I nipped into a greeting card stall to pay for some that I'd selected, and recognised the lady immediately. "Well well" said I , "I thought I was back in Woodys's DIY - how grand to see you again." The lady was thrilled to bits to be recognised and returned the compliment and we had a nice little chat about the old days.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

The tripe stall is not the last one in the country.Dewsbury Market has one but how long they will last is any ones guess.Tripe was eaten more often in years gone by, but as the old people pass on i think it will go with them offal does not suit our modern life stile.By offal i meen tripe sheeps head chitterlings udder.Liver and kidneys are still eaten.
No matter were i end my days im an Hunslet lad with Hunslet ways.

[amongst other things] Hi Lilts I think you could be right who knows what goes into some of the cheap burgers.

In the days when children were supposed to eat whatever was put infront of them I used to have tripe for tea at my Grandma's every week.Probably because it was white I assumed it was some strange kind of fish. Once my sister enlightened me as to what it was that was it! Not had any since and can't really say I've missed it,yuk!
