there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

This building was indeed the old City Square branch of Midland Bank but it was never a branch of the Yorkshire Bank. It was however a branch of the Yorkshire Banking Company an entirely different animal and one of the banks which amalgamated to form Midland Bank. In those days what is now Yorkshire Bank was known as the Yorkshire Penny Bank and its main office was on Infirmary Street.

Quite right there Barwicker.! Opened in 1899 as the headquarters of the Yorkshire Banking Co. The massive figures that dominate the building represented the occupations of the district. And Drapesy identified a couple of the 'coats of arms' insignia OK.They are Pontefract; Hull;York;Bradford; Dewsbury; Wakefield and Leeds in the centre of course.

I was taught, as a kid, that the building was opened, originally as the cloth exchange??

I stand corrected! I should have known that being a former Yorkshire Bank employee. If you go down the side of Bishopgate street the railings still have YB logo's on them. Strange that they were not removed for the War effort?I thought the cloth hall was over the road. Roughly where the Black Prince is now!!

No idea LS1. Unless the bank was built on the site of the cloth hall? Never seen owt definitive about it, just what some teacher once told me!

I'm going to take issue with a couple of your identifications there farbank!!you say I have mis-identified No 1 as Doncaster when it should be PontefractNo 6 as Huddersfield when it should be DewsburyNo. 7 as Ripon when it should be Wakefield:
