I seem to remember a large haberdashery type store called Scarr's on Kirkgate.Scarr's were hardware shops, always had that characteristic smell of Carbolic and mothballs.

Leeds Libraries have 69 copies plusseveral other works by this chap

Perhaps, being a kid, it had something to do with the soap!
