A very old Establishment down the Skulls head yard (Part 1)

Well they've asked for public input and ideas Si. There would be nothing to say a few interested members of S.L couldn't do a little project, or add some ideas is there? That whole area around the back of Parish church and calls is quite pleasant. It has yards and passages just like York. It's just a shame it's nothing more than a dead area. No one ever goes down there, yet it's the oldest part of Leeds that still retains a great deal of history.

Hello Phill, reading your post I was almost there, walking down the cobbles, enjoying the history, ahhhhhhhhhhhh, you put it almost poetically, so true, I agree with everything you say. I think most Leeds People are proud of their city and would love to retain or even reclaim some of our history. Perhaps all us secret leedsers should get together outside the relevant dept with banners and all that, excuse to get together.

Exactly Billy.If they included the existing yards like Pine Court herehttp://snipurl.com/27s4j0How good would they be with York flags, cobbles and old style lamps e.t.c. The back of Kirkgate would make a great place for street performers, stalls and such. At the moment it's just dead land. There are plenty of places to use such passages and open up the whole area IMO.

I'd want to avoid theme park rose tinted yesteryore sugaryness. The area behind chanellors court was used for a while for an arts market and it worked well, would be an idea to develop. Perhaps the shops turfed out of the corn exchange could have stalls!

Back in the 80's a very good friend had an uncle who had a garage down the Calls/Parish church area, it was called "Americo Motors". Lovely old building, went inside a couple of times. Does anyone know if it is still there?

I don't think for a minute anyone wants a fake Las Vegas style Ye Olde Leeds theme Park, but if done correctly, and in keeping with traditional use of materials, and sympathetic to what was flattened before, then I'm sure Leeds for once would have something a little different for a change. Just my opinions, but I'd hate to see another scheme wasted.

Agreed, we don't need another 'exciting new concept in urban living' or and 'exciting blend of retail units (as seen in every high street)'.

well considering some of the stuff that happened in Kirkgate and area over the centuries,you could have quite an interesting theme park<LOL>. Body snatching at the church,dumping suicides bodies in the graveyard,soldiers riots etc<G>.

Well i will be heading to this consultation,but one cant help thinking that they will have probably have a good idea what they want to do,which i would imagine will be shops.However £2.6m,though welcome,may not be enough to do even Kirkgate,let alone the rest of the area.This area,as digger has pointed out,has the potential to be a great area to wander around,especially on a nice sunny sunday afternoon (via the Palace of course)The buildings on Kirkgate are in shocking condition,you should see the state of the pigeon infested dilapidated rooves of the buildings on lower kirkgate.There is also the assembly rooms,which are empty upstairs now,and i believe that the Superna bar in there is also closed.Would be great to be able to encompass this and Crown Street in with the whloe redevelopment.Clearly this area has not succeded in its current and recently passed guises,so we may well have to accept something not entireley appropriate with what im sure most people on here want.For my part id like to see Pine Court opened up again,the arches under the viaduct become accessible to pedestrians with cobbles,lamp posts etc.Perhaps a new use for the car park behind lower Kirkgate,for example a semi open air refreshment area,with a daytime relaxation element and a slightly different evening time atmosphere.Somewhere where those who arent intersted in the bars of Call Lane and all their blooming DJ's or Oceana can just have a good old evening relaxing.This could even be somehow incorporated with tha Assembly Rooms,and may be even the shops that front lower Kirkgate could become restaurants,with thecar park at the rear being their outdoor eating area (in summer obviously)In fact if there were such a conversion to restaurants then perhaps there could be a focus on small independent owners,a world cuisine thme with restaurants from different world foods all being represented.Not ideal,but to make this regeneration work it has to be viable,and this will mean some sort of retail/leisure element top attract visitors.
