The Ordnance Survey (OS) map for 1851 in the Old Maps UK website shows a ‘Saw Pit’ and ‘Pump’ not far from Adel Crags. Neither is shown as such in the 1893 OS map in the website, where ‘Crag Farm’ occupies the site of the Pump (that map does though seem to have a ‘P’ at the farm, so perhaps that could mean a pump). I have put a copy of part of the OS 1851 map here and an enlarged version of part of that in my post below to better show the Saw Pit and Pump (I have not worked out how to put more than one attachment in a single post!).I have tried the Internet and the Local History section of the Leeds Central Library to find some information about Saw Pit and the Pump but have not been successful. Geologically the area is part of the Lower Coal Measures, but as far as I understand that had/has no coal or at least none worth mining. In view of that I would have thought Saw Pit would not be connected with coal, but it was clearly a place that was important enough to note on a map. The Pump would however seem to imply there was a need to pump something (presumably water) so possibly implying underground workings. The 1851 map seems to show Saw Pit was very close by but not where the Pump was. The area where the Pump and Crag Farm were is currently a thinly wooded area that has lots of small mounds, bits of stone walls and other debris that may be remains of the farm but may also include some modern dumping (I have taken photographs of the site, some of which I may add later).I would be grateful if anyone can give me any information about Saw Pit and the Pump, or at least say where information can be found. Please accept my apologies if Saw Pit and/or the Pump have previously been a SL topic but I did try a search and could not readily find anything.

I did not realsie that post had gone through as I thought I had cancelled it! I tried to add the map but it was not an acceptable file type so I tried to add jpeg after the file name but that did not work so I cancelled the thread, or thought I had done! How do I get the copies I have of parts of the maps to be accepted for inclusion as an image here? Signing off for now but will be on later today.

Considering the proximity even in 1854 of plenty of standing timber in the area, would the Saw Pit more likely to be exactly what it is named?See link here http://www.wealddown-schools.org.uk/Sci ... 20yard.htm

It does seem a strong possibilty. It is that 'Saw Pit' is capitalised and thus implying a name that is making me think it was something considered important enough to put on the map. That would however not be the case if it should have been 'saw pit' like there is at least one 'clay pit' that I've seen on the old map further down the area.

You can't just dhange the file extension Leodian - open the picture and 'save as' again to where ever you want and chose the jpeg option from the drop-down menue at the file type box. That will give you the correct format. Make sure the file size isn't too big too, there is a limit for uploading - you may need to resize your image too.

I have now tried that but the only file type options that come up are text ones such as .wps, .com and .rtf. I suspect the problem is that not being sure how to do it I originally saved the maps by taking a screen grab and then copying and pasting the part I wanted, whch saved them as .wps documents. I know that other people manage to put sections from maps into SL posts so it can be done, but I'm clearly too thick to be able to work out how they did it! Red faced me.

Do you have paint or similar application? You need to save there as a picture, not incorporate into an ordinary document.

I think I have almost (but not yet fully so) managed to save an enlargement of part of the 1851 map in a format that can be saved in the SL site (or not if it fails!). I probably have a lot of space in the saved image in addition to the map section, but I'm getting there! If it has worked the map shows Saw Pit and the Pump near Adel Crags.

Wow it worked! I feel chuffed. Someday I may even figure out how to just save that needed without the space.
